Urea is a nitrogen-rich organic compound with the chemical formula CO(NH₂)₂. It is a colorless, odorless solid with relatively low toxicity and high solubility in water, making it a critical material in both agricultural and chemical industries.
Thanks to its chemical versatility, availability, and cost efficiency, urea remains one of the most important raw materials in modern agricultural and industrial production.

Urea is extensively used as a primary nitrogen source in chemical fertilizers. More than 90% of global urea production is dedicated to nitrogen-based fertilizers. With a nitrogen content of approximately 46%, urea contains the highest nitrogen concentration among all solid nitrogen fertilizers, making it highly efficient and economical.

Due to its high nitrogen density, urea offers lower transportation and handling costs per unit of effective nitrogen, which is a major advantage in large-scale agricultural and industrial use.

After application to soil, urea undergoes hydrolysis, converting into ammonia (NH₃) and carbon dioxide (CO₂). The released ammonia is then oxidized by soil bacteria into nitrate, which is readily absorbed by plants and contributes significantly to plant growth and crop yield improvement.

In addition to agriculture, urea is a key raw material in the chemical industry and is widely used in the production of:

  • Urea-formaldehyde resins
  • Industrial adhesives, including urea-formaldehyde and melamine-urea-formaldehyde
  • Plastics and polymer products
  • Potassium cyanate
  • Urea nitrate

Thanks to its chemical versatility, availability, and cost efficiency, urea remains one of the most important raw materials in modern agricultural and industrial production.
